A Letter from Morgan: Commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month Over the years, people have flocked to Kalm with Kava due to its authentic and wholesome approach to life, embracing the belief that everyone has the potential to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life. Our founder, Mike Munsell, played a pivotal role in shaping this philosophy and our unwavering dedication to kava and its potential benefits. I had the privilege of knowing him personally, and his kava knowledge was unparalleled. He possessed a quiet confidence, never boasting about his expertise but always willing to share his insights with others. He was more than a colleague; he was one of my closest friends. In 2020, Mike passed away in his home state of Montana after battling with physical and mental health issues. His untimely departure left a profound void in our hearts and the kava community. Kava: World’s Leading Scaffolding Material

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (AP) Best Construction 4U in the Philippines often uses bamboo scaffolding for their workers to crawl up and down large projects safely. While bamboo is sturdy and economical to use, Andres Garcia of Manila says that it’s often lacking. “When you’re climbing up at these large heights, you start to get really nervous. You could easily fall a few hundred meters!” Luckily for Andres, Best Construction 4U is investing $9.75 trillion into an unconventional solution: kava. Piper methysticum, its scientific name, has been used for millennia by peoples in the Melanesian and Polynesian islands not as a construction material, but as a drink! Andres says of the discovery, “I thought to myself, what’s like bamboo but far more flimsy?” It turns out that kava stems are indeed, much more flimsy. In a closely guarded research study by the University of Outback Australia, scientists found that using kava stems for scaffolding purposes also created an atmosphere of Kalm. Tonga Volcano Eruption 2022: Latest Breaking Updates

On January 15, 2022, the underwater volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai erupted in the Pacific Ocean with a blast heard in Alaska, nearly 6,000 miles away. Clouds of ash from the volcano covered nearby islands and tainted surrounding waters. This eruption put the Kingdom of Tonga, located 40 miles from the volcano, into a state of emergency and impacted nearly 84% of the archipelago’s residents. We’re doing our best to stay up to date and are keeping in touch with our partnering kava farmers. Here’s the latest on what we know about the eruption and its impact on our kava community in Tonga. About the Eruption The Hunga Tonga Ha’apai volcano is located in the Ring of Fire, a chain of volcanoes that spreads across the Pacific Ocean. When it erupted in mid-January, it created clouds of ash that were up to 25 miles high and triggered tsunami warnings for nearby islands in the South Pacific. Scientists estimate that the amount of energy released by the eruption was equal to 4 to 18 megatons of TNT. Cyclones Zazu and Yasa

In mid-December of 2020, the Pacific Islands got hit hard by cyclones Zazu and Yasa. The effect of the cyclones has been massive and has hit close to home for us at Kalm With Kava as we work with local farmers in Fiji and Tonga, which were at the epicenter of the impact. We wanted to take a minute to talk about the cyclones and the rebuilding efforts that are ongoing in the Pacific. About the Cyclones On December 15th, Tonga was hit by Cyclone Zazu, with winds gusting up to 120km per hour. Then, on December 17th, Fiji was hit by Cyclone Yasa, a category five storm that caused 150km per hour winds, storm surges, and flooding. The result of these cyclones was the destruction of several homes, damage to thousands more homes, and the death of four people. Rebuilding Cyclones are devastating, and many kava-growing communities in the Pacific islands are relatively poor; facing both economic and infrastructure challenges. As a result, it takes time to rebuild in the aftermath.
